Klintholm Harbour – Service Port for Offshore Wind Turbines

Located on eastern Møn, Klintholm Harbour plays a central role in servicing offshore wind turbines in the Baltic Sea. From here, the offshore wind farms Kriegers Flak I and Baltic 2 are serviced by the Swedish energy company Vattenfall and German EnBW respectively.

> Exceptional Logistics

The wind turbines are serviced from the harbour using crew transfer vessels, known as CTVs, which transport wind turbine technicians to the offshore installations. During peak season, when both companies conduct service campaigns, 4-6 vessels depart from Klintholm Harbour daily. The journey to Kriegers Flak I takes just 45 minutes.

The two offshore wind farms, Kriegers Flak I and Baltic 2, together produce 893 MW of electricity annually. This equals the power consumption of 940,000 Danish households.

“The turbines have performed above expectations. The first year can often involve running-in difficulties and challenges, but we have fortunately been spared from that. We have very high availability on them,” says Vattenfall’s site manager at Klintholm Harbour, Morten Skouboe.

> A Flourishing Tourist Harbour

Besides servicing offshore wind turbines, Klintholm Harbour is an essential marina that welcomes tourism while contributing to restoring marine biodiversity. The local association Vandklubben has installed fish nurseries in the harbour, creating new habitats for fish and marine life. The association plans to establish maritime gardens and an information center to spread knowledge about Klintholm Harbour’s history, marine biodiversity, and offshore energy production.

“The vision is for schools, tourists, and locals to learn about everything from the traditional fishing industry to the transition to green wind energy and maritime gardens that can help restore marine biodiversity,” says Jesper Carlson, one of the initiators and chairman of the local association Vandklubben.

> Vattenfall

Vattenfall is located at Klintholm Harbour – a European energy company working to electrify industries, deliver energy, and modernize lifestyles. The company has many years of experience and is highly experienced in servicing offshore wind farms, such as Kriegers Flak I, which the company has serviced from Klintholm Harbour since the wind farm opened in 2021.

Vattenfall's offshore wind farm Kriegers Flak I provides green electricity to 600,000 households in Denmark, and two CTVs service the wind turbines daily from Klintholm Harbour. The wind farm is also Scandinavia's largest, consisting of 72 offshore wind turbines.

Besides focusing on the fossil-free future, Vattenfall also creates local jobs in Vordingborg Municipality, employing around 50 people. Additionally, work with Kriegers Flak I attracts many curious stakeholders to Klintholm Harbour, spreading awareness of the destination far and wide.

In 2022, Vattenfall won the Vordingborg Business Association's Business Award. The reason for this was Vattenfall's choice of Vordingborg Municipality and their work to integrate and contribute to positive development in the local area. Thanks to them, life and business activity have been created at Klintholm Harbour.

"At Vattenfall, we are extremely happy and proud to receive this award. Offshore wind is about a fossil-free future and energy security, but also very much about good neighborly relations and local jobs. We make an effort to fit well into the area, and it's wonderful to see that our efforts appear to be working."

> EnBW

Centrally located at Klintholm Harbour, you'll also find EnBW, which services the Baltic 2 wind farm. EnBW has its headquarters in Germany but operates in 8 different EU countries, including Denmark.

The company works tirelessly towards green transition and energy production, aiming to be climate neutral by 2035. Their primary work revolves around transforming energy production in Europe to be based on renewable energy in the future.

The Baltic wind farm opened in 2015 and currently produces green electricity for 340,000 households in Denmark, and EnBW's work with the wind farm is now creating several jobs in Vordingborg Municipality.
